hi varun, this is dr tv from cuddalore.
thanks for the very informative blog. it was just what the doctor ordered at the nick of time.
however i wondered a lot how you got to the first place -that of log in screen.
i read the manual and found that one opens the browser and types192.168.1.1
the default log in user name nad the pw is also given in the manual.

thanks a lot.

Hi drtvasudevan,
once you get your modem connected to your PC, you have technically a LAN, in which there are only two nodes (your PC and the modem). Your modem has an IP, which happens to be 192.168.1.1. There are settings by which the modem's IP can be changed from the modem's control panel (ie., the pages after logging in). You can comment here, if u have any qns.
Bye,
Varun

was also just wondering if one needs to be root to do this.
when i was trying in yoper (my first sttempts) it said access denied.
this morning i tries in suse after bringing the terminal up and typing su then giving the root pw; the access was given.
have not gotten to configure it fully though.
doing some big downloading.
went to dataone mail site and changed my pw and the connection got cut in a couple of minutes.
thought it was general shutdown but found out that this pw is stored in the modem (router)and should not be changed.
had to get it changed back to the original.
now it works.
meanwhile my download got disrupted.

Hi Varun,

I'm Kannan from Chennai. It was really interesting to read abt the BSNL Broadband Modem installation.
I am having a Sify broadband(if you can call it so)connection. This connection dosen't have any modem and the speed ( I have taken a 128kbps)is not at all good and the charge is too heavy(Rs.900 for on month.

I planning to switch to BSNL Broadband. I would like to know what modem I should buy. I would probably be buying this in USA. Price is not a factor. Please let me know the type and name of the modem to be bought. Do I also need a splitter along with it? Can I get the splitter here or do I buy it along with the modem.

Please let me know these details and I would really appreciate if you could mail me these details at kanna_kasturi@yahoo.com

Thanks,

Kannan.

hello varun, i have this utstar ut300R modem and the setup now is an always on connection. is there any way for me to get it back to a PPPoE connection. when i try sudoing pppoeconf on my ubuntu box, it says "I scanned more then one interface but the access concentrator of your service provider failed to respond. Another reason may be another pppoe process controlling the modem". i have also tried resetting the modem in vain :(

Hello Varun

Seems to be you are the best person to help me out. I am using BSNL (Bangalore) connection and my modem is UT 300R2U. Can you help me to :

(1) Port Forwarding : In the advance setup, NAT - DMZ host, there is an option. But heard that this is not the right way and not really safe. Is there any other option ?

OR

(2) Firware upgradation : As the current interface is so complicated and doesn't show me the same interface as I was able to see in some of the sites in the net, is there anyway I can upgrade the firmware so that I can get a different interface which is more simple to do the configuration

Awaiting your earliest resposne

Thanks and All the very best

Cheers

I have tested and works fine.

This is a Winrar file(UT300R2U.rar).

If you do not have Winrar then search on google.com and download it for for free. It is just like Winzip.

Pasted from Mail:

Dear Varun,

This is to let you know that I managed to install USB driver for the
ADSL modem UT-300R2U on my Windows 98 SE machine. The driver supplied
by BSNL, or downloaded from a BSNL site did not work -- the
installation procedure using their file "setup.exe" stalled in
between. However, using the file

http://assistenza.tiscali.it/300R2u_windows.zip

which I think is identical in content to

http://rapidshare.com/files/46287730/UT300R2U.rar

unzipping it, and then using Control Panel of Windows to "add new
hardware", I mangaged to install the driver. (These links were
obtained from your site).

I went through the required set-up for the modem, so that I could
check that the broadband connection works. (As of now, I dont have a
username, so I could only use the test username they gave me, which
provided access only to the BSNL website).

So for now, I am not going to bother about an ethernet card.

I hope this information will help some others.

Best regards,
Saurabh

When I connect my modem via Ethernet cable to the computer, turn it on and then enable the LAN connection, it gets connected successfully. The Power light, the DSL light, and the Ethernet light remain ON. But the Internet light does not light up at all. I have gone to 19.168.1.1 and tried changing a few settings, but with no avail. Hi, need a clarification. For UTStarcom 300R2U, the page for Save/Reboot is

There's a Save&Reboot button.

Q: Is there any way to build a URL, which when clicked automatically Saves & Reboots ?

hi all.....
this is the first time i sm posting.

For all users of UT300R2U

If u want to download from torrent effectively u have to do something called port forwarding.
But in UT300R2U u can't do that.

So, there is an alternative.

Go to the router confoguration page, then go to NAT, in that DMZ host and type in ur ipaddress (U can find out the ipaddress by typing "ipconfig" in the command prompt).

But a word of caution. this is not safe as it allows other people to get hold of ur comp.
so i suggest u change ur router admin password( by default it is admin only)before doin this.

after this ur torrent speed ll go high.
i have done this. trust me.
but change ur router admin password please.

Anonymous said...

actually everybody please change ur router admin password.

it dosen't matter if u have enabled DMZ host or not, people can access ur router aaram se with the username and password admin.

they can get ur internet username and password and access ur account.

so i strongly suggest u to change ur admin password and also ur internet connection password.

please........

Hi Varun,
This is Ameya from Pune. I am in a little bit of a trouble here & would greatly appreciate your help. Lemme give a brief overview of the situation.
I have a HP dv6602au laptop with Win Vista(32 bit) & had to replace the motherboard. In this process i had to format my HDD & thus reinstall the OS. After doing this the BSNL UT300RTU modem i have from Dataone is not assigning an ip address to the laptop thru the LAN connection. The HP tech support said that I would need the recovery cd to get back the OS to factory default settings. I had not made the recovery cd when i had got the laptop. The easier way out of this is to connect the modem vis the USB right? So after i tried installing the modem USB drivers with the cd, it faltered. The installation always aborted. Tried finding the USB drivers for vista online but couldnt manage. SO plz plz plz lemme know a solution to this problem i am in. Would greatly appreciate your help! Can get in touch with me on ameya.neurgaonkar@gmail.com

Hi,
I have taken BSNL Broadband and i have connected ASDL Modem. Due to some reason my LAN Connection and Broadband connection installed differently. So whenever i start my pc i have to first connect LAN Connection then after i have to connect Broadband Connection through PPPOE through WAN. But still i am not enjoying broadband speed. So please let me know how to connect in a proper way so i can able to use Broadband effectively.

Vijay said...

Well,I think u need to go to your portal page i.e. 192.168.1.1 and select pppoe option.Which will authenticate and get connected automatically whenever you switch on the modem. With respect to your internet speed, please be more specific about it??

Varun S said...

If you have issues with the speed, please quantify it. the best way to do that is to goto sites like http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and check your speed (note that often your traffic is directed to some place outside BSNL network. So its a wise idea to speed test with some site which is outside India). If that is too low for the connection speed you subscribed to, then you really have a problem in terms of speed.

I want both computers simuiltanously and independently accessing Internet

and i came 2 know that it is possible to share net and access broadband simultanously and i should change a settings in bsnl home site 192.168.1.1 but i could able understand wat are the settings to be done for access b.b parallelly...
so any one can please tell me or guide me in wat way i can b able to modify d settings to access net parallelly
please send ur suggetions to my email id its:

Vijay said...

Well you dont need to change any settings in 192.168.1.1.I am assuming that you are having type 1modem.You have one usb port and one ethernet port.Use them to connect to your computers. As far as internet sharing is concerned, there is an option in windows for sharing the internet connections.(both the comps will share the same IP. and it creates a file called share.img)option is in control panel.

Hi Varun,

I have a UT300R2U modem which i need to use for my BSNL broadband connection.I have connected the modem via LAN and I tried configuring it through ethernet from IE with an IP 192.168.1.1 but the page did not open up.I dont have the driver cd of this modem. Is the driver needed only when the modem is connected through USB or is it needed also when connected through LAN also? If yes then please mail me the driver to laya_bpl@yahoo.com.Also if the modem is connected through LAN then is the modem supposed to be displayed in the Phone and modems option under device manager in PC?
Thanks

because of this i got a bill for Rs. 6000/-

My friends telling that you have to change the setting from AUTO TO MANNUAL Download

please tell me how to change the same

my mail address is hrcsetty@gmail.com

please help me

Varun S said...

The best way to avoid this problem is to switch off the modem when you are not using. Also you need to figure out which is using the network so much. May be its a spyware/rogueware. Please update your virus scanner and firewall to the latest signature and scan your system. If you know what you are doing, you can sniff the packet transfer and see where these packets go and take appropriate action. The best interim solution till then would be to install a firewall.
